1970 Renegade 1 CJ5 - Classic Jeeps For Sale

1970 Renegade 1 CJ5

Extremely rare, a unicorn, virtually one of a kind. However one describes a find of this kind, with great reluctance I'm selling my extremely rare 1970 Jeep CJ5 "Renegade 1", Special Sales Order #D-5017, VIN #8305017 361467. This truly one of the most rare and collectible jeeps of all time! This un-restored jeep is one of about 500 units produced that year. The 1970 "Renegade 1" package was a special order option first available that year and is considered to be one of jeeps first performance oriented models. The "Renegade" option went on to become a regular production option in 1972 as one the most popular CJ packages through the CJ life cycle. It could be said the "Renegade" package was the father of the "Rubicon" option, which became available on the 2003 Wrangler TJ. The "Renegade" nameplate has continued to survive through a number of options and models to this day. The 1970 "Renegade 1" special order package consisted of;
225 CID "Dauntless" 2bbl V6 engine rated at 160hp/235ft/lbs
Borg Warner T14, 3-speed manual transmission
Dana/Spicer D18 transfer case, 2.46 Lo-range ratio

I've owned this jeep since May 2017. It had 23K original miles and now has 27K.
It is a very solid, west coast jeep and has spent the last 6 years fair weather driven and stored indoors. I was told the front axle, transmission and transfer case and suspension and brakes were rebuilt shortly prior to my purchase. That does seem to be the case but the transmission is a little sensitive to 3-2 downshifts. The engine and rear axle have no issues. It runs, stops and handles very good considering what it is. It has been modified with HEI ignition and Flowmaster exhaust an aftermarket wiring harness, Bestop soft-top, 10x15x31 BFG AT tires and black powder coating on the wheels. The upholstery has been restored and there has been some minor bodywork and paint on the front sheet metal. Since I've owner it I've rebuilt the carb, replaced the clutch cable and water pump, added the Flowmaster, powder coated the seat frames, added a fan shroud and, of course, serviced regularly. Everything works and there is no damage. The driver's side floor is in nice shape. The passenger side floor in front of the toolbox is pitted and has several pinholes. It is a wonderful jeep as is or a very minor project to truly return it to show room glory. Clear title and ready for a new home!
